Explore the world through language: Study a Master’s at Stockholm University
At Stockholm University, studying languages at the Master’s level is about more than mastering words — it’s about understanding how language shapes society, identity, and communication across cultures. Maria Kuteeva, Professor of English Linguistics at the Department of English, shares her insights on what makes advanced language studies both inspiring and valuable for international students.
Connecting theory, research, and real-world issues

“What I find most rewarding is the possibility of introducing students to the latest research in the field and engaging them in exploring how our world is shaped by and through our use of language,” says Professor Kuteeva. “I also illustrate how different theoretical frameworks can be applied to analyse language and discourse in society in relation to latest social or political events, helping students to draw connections with their own experiences and perspectives.”
At the Master’s level, students at Stockholm University are encouraged to think critically, connect theory with real-world phenomena, and contribute to discussions that reflect the rapidly changing global landscape.
Opportunities that go beyond the classroom

Advanced language studies open up a broad range of opportunities:
“There is a wide spectrum of paths, from pursuing a research career and doctoral education to working in professions related to education or communication—for example, in NGOs or companies seeking to expand their international reach. For example, one of my former Master’s students wrote her thesis comparing how researchers and journalists communicate about Climate Science on the internet. She is now working as a communicator at NewClimate Institute in Berlin, where she specializes in developing communication strategies and managing communication and design processes,” explains Professor Kuteeva.
With a Master’s degree in languages from Stockholm University, graduates are equipped with analytical and intercultural skills that are highly valued across sectors.
A global classroom enriched by international students
“The participation of international students is essential to creating a dynamic and lively classroom and academic environment,” says Professor Kuteeva. “They bring different perspectives and lived experiences that enrich collaborative knowledge-building.”
At Stockholm University, diversity is at the heart of academic life. Each year, students from all over the world contribute to a vibrant, inclusive, and inspiring international community where ideas and perspectives meet.
Career paths in communication, education, and technology
Graduates with a Master’s in languages find career opportunities in many fields.
“In addition to jobs related to communication and language education, there are also opportunities in the tech industry working with generative AI, such as large language models,” says Professor Kuteeva.
The growing intersection between language, communication, and technology opens exciting new paths for graduates who want to apply their linguistic expertise in innovative ways.
A supportive and collaborative environment
“You will be studying in a supportive and collaborative environment,” Professor Kuteeva notes. “You can apply the knowledge you acquire in your studies to answer research questions that concern and interest you.”
Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, explore interdisciplinary perspectives, and engage with real-world challenges through research and collaboration.
