Astrid PetterssonProfessor emerita
About me
Astrid Pettersson is a Professor of Education and Mathematics Education. She started her career as a teacher in mathematics and chemistry. After ten years teaching in secondary school, upper secondary school and adult education she began working in a longitudinal project at Stockholm Institute of Education. The aim of this longitudinal project (Evaluation through follow-up, ETF) was to provide a basis for evaluation of the Swedish educational system by following individual students in their educational careers. After six years she began to work at the PRIM-group and since 1997 she is the research leader for this group. The PRIM-group has the commission from the National Agency for Education to construct national tests in Mathematics. During some years the PRIM-group also had the commission to construct assessment materials in domestic science at secondary school and for the vocational education in upper secondary school. Astrid has been the leader for a general research network called “Network for the Assessment of Knowledge” which crosses over subject borders. She was 2007-2013 director for the research school Educational Assessment (A research school financed by the Swedish Research Council). Astrid has been involved in PISA since its start and has been the research leader in the department level for PISA since the beginning and up to 2015.
Teaching
Astrid has supervised a number of doctoral and masters students and has been responsible for a doctoral course in basic quantitative analysis and in statistic for teachers. She has given lectures for teacher education students and for teachers in inservice training all over Sweden.
Research
Astrid has many research interests. Focus is on assessment of knowledge in mathematics and she studies how students solve problems in mathematics and their development of achievement. In the ETF-project Astrid studied students´ solutions and development of achievement in mathematics and their attitudes in grades 3, 6 and 9. In the project National evaluation (NU) she studied the students´knowledge in and attitudes towards mathematics in grades 2, 5 and 9. The data collections were in 1989, 1992, 1995 and 2003. Now she has the possibility to continue this theme of research in her work with the national tests for the compulsory school and for course 1 in the upper secondary school and also for different types of national assessment supporting material in mathematics. In some years she worked with researchers from Great Britain and France in the project Computer based Mathematics in the Formation of European Engineers. IMATEC. For a few years, Astrid was research leader for a project that investigated students with allergies and their performances during the pollen period.
