About me
My interests are mainly in the field of historical Scandinavian philology and medieval studies in a broader perspective. In the ongoing project Heliga Birgittas texter på fornsvenska I present a modern edition of the Old Swedish version of the Revelations of St Birgitta. I have worked on scribal identifications, medieval written culture and the interplay between Old Swedish and Latin in medieval manuscripts. Another important strand in my research is related to medieval spirituality and the history of the medieval sermon and preaching. Between 2006-2015 I was General editor and member of the Editorial Board of the book series Sermo. Studies on Patristic, Medieval and Reformation Sermons and Preaching (Brepols Publishers). Between 2017-2025 I was the president of the Svenska fornskriftsällskapet.

Saints Catherine and Birgitta as Received by Preachers
2020. Roger Andersson. Sanctity and Female Authorship, 138-158
ChapterMany historians have asked themselves whether there was any direct contact between Catherine of Siena and Birgitta of Sweden. When speaking of Birgitta’s wisdom the preacher likens her to a wise architect who builds her house on a solid ground and foundation. Likewise, the preachers use two different strategies of demonstrating how this is done: in Catherinian preaching, mostly the life and fate of the person is at stake. In Catherine’s Dialogue, the spiritual life of humankind is treated and discussed by means of analogy, allegory, and metaphor, and likewise the pictorial language and extensive use of metaphors have justly been described as one of the most salient characteristics of Birgitta’s style. Furthermore, when quoting from Birgitta’s texts, the Vadstena priests ascribe them such a high theological authority that they practically put them on a par with Scripture itself.

The Birgittine Experience
2013. Claes Gejrot, Mia Åkestam, Roger Andersson.
Book (ed)The Birgittine Experience contains a broad overview of recent scholarship on Saint Birgitta and the Birgittine Order. The nineteen papers were originally presented at an international conference in Stockholm in October 2011.The conference and the book are interdisciplinary, gathering scholars that specialise in various fields, for instance Art History, Literature, Scandinavian Languages and History. The authors represent ten countries – Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Germany, England, Poland, Estonia, the United States and Israel. Three major themes were envisaged for the conference: Birgittine art and culture, vernacular texts and literature, and Birgittine activities outside Vadstena. Although a few papers could easily have been placed in more than one group, these themes also form the structure of the printed book.
