Heliga Birgittas texter på fornsvenska

Projektet Heliga Birgittas texter på fornsvenska har som mål dels en modern kritisk utgåva av samtliga fornsvenska texter som tillskrivs eller kan föras tillbaka på Heliga Birgitta (1303–1373), både uppenbarelserna och andra mindre, relaterade texter, dels ett tillgängliggörande av texten i alla handskriftsvittnen.

    I sitt bidrag till denna bok som bygger på en konferens i Jerusalem i februari 2020, berättar Roger Andersson om heliga Birgittas resa till Det heliga landet år 1372. De uppenbarelser om Jesu födelse och död hon fick under resan fick stor betydelse för hur dessa motiv återgavs i samtidens konst och litteratur.

  • Saints Catherine and Birgitta as Received by Preachers

    Many historians have asked themselves whether there was any direct contact between Catherine of Siena and Birgitta of Sweden. When speaking of Birgitta’s wisdom the preacher likens her to a wise architect who builds her house on a solid ground and foundation. Likewise, the preachers use two different strategies of demonstrating how this is done: in Catherinian preaching, mostly the life and fate of the person is at stake. In Catherine’s Dialogue, the spiritual life of humankind is treated and discussed by means of analogy, allegory, and metaphor, and likewise the pictorial language and extensive use of metaphors have justly been described as one of the most salient characteristics of Birgitta’s style. Furthermore, when quoting from Birgitta’s texts, the Vadstena priests ascribe them such a high theological authority that they practically put them on a par with Scripture itself.

    Birgittine Manuscripts and Medieval Book Production

    This article is an attempt to identify the scribes of four anonymous and undated manuscripts containing the Old Swedish version of the Revelations of St Birgitta of Sweden: C 61 (Uppsala University Library), A 33 and A 44 (The National Library of Sweden), and Mh 20 (Lund University Library) and by means of textual comparison formulate a hypothesis of their place of origin. It is shown that the youngest of these, C 61, was compiled from exemplars representing different versions of the Old Swedish text and that the editio princeps of the Latin text (Ghotan 1492) was used for comparison. One of the main hands in C 61 and the only hand in A 33 are attested in the Registrum ecclesie lincopensis. The scribe of A 44 and Mh 20 is identified as Lars Finvidsson, canon and notarius publicus in Linköping at the beginning of the fifteenth century. This suggests that these books were produced at a learned and highly literate scribal centre by professional scribes, possibly commissioned for this purpose by the abbey in Vadstena.

  • The Birgittine Experience: Papers from the Birgitta conference in Stockholm 2011

    The Birgittine Experience contains a broad overview of recent scholarship on Saint Birgitta and the Birgittine Order. The nineteen papers were originally presented at an international conference in Stockholm in October 2011.The conference and the book are interdisciplinary, gathering scholars that specialise in various fields, for instance Art History, Literature, Scandinavian Languages and History. The authors represent ten countries – Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Germany, England, Poland, Estonia, the United States and Israel. Three major themes were envisaged for the conference: Birgittine art and culture, vernacular texts and literature, and Birgittine activities outside Vadstena. Although a few papers could easily have been placed in more than one group, these themes also form the structure of the printed book.
