Research project Civic communication in the time of climate crisis
The project aims to deepen our understanding of the complex tasks that civic communication has in the transformation to a more sustainable society. The studies included utilize tools from sociolinguistics and discourse analysis to explore the role of language in societal change, and, more specifically, the role of linguistic messages in human action.
Some of the empirical foci are media, new words and political discourse.
Climate scientists across the world unanimously state that emissions of greenhouse gas must be urgently and radically reduced. The societal transformation which is demanded to accomplish this is vast, and bound up with other profound global changes considering environment, health, and social justice, as encompassed in the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. In many ways, the impending societal transformation relates to communication; concerning everything from changing the consumption patterns of private individuals to bringing about and obtaining legitimacy for political decisions.
