Research project Collective Matters: A community-based exploration of ethical design

Technology has the power to improve the world, but it can also contribute to problems such as inequality and overconsumption. To address this, ethical considerations must be prioritized. In this project, researchers and digital designers collaborate to explore how ethical design might be achieved.

Digital products, systems, and services affect people and our planet—often positively, but sometimes negatively. This has been studied extensively, but the research findings on ethical technology design are rarely applied in industry practice.

Previous studies show that communities, where professionals share experiences, learn from each other, and jointly develop their professional identity and practice, can drive real change. Additionally, research calls for more practical experiments and strategies to strengthen ethical design.

Collective Matters is a community that brings together designers and technologists from the digital design industry and researchers from academia. In this research project, we will develop the community by exploring ethical reflection and action in practice. The project focuses on the question: How can ethics become an integrated, lasting, and valued part of the design process?
