Research project Immobilization of PFAS in landfills using activated biochars (ABC)

This project tackles the growing environmental threat posed by PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in landfills, which are increasingly recognized as potential secondary sources of PFAS contamination to surrounding groundwater and ecosystems.

The goal is to develop and test an on-site remediation method using a novel type of activated biochar (ABC) to immobilize PFAS in landfill soils and reduce their leaching into groundwater. The urgency of this issue has been highlighted by waste management companies and environmental authorities, who are calling for both scientifically sound threshold values for PFAS in landfills and cost-effective solutions to prevent further environmental release in line with updated EU water directives.

To meet these needs, the project applies a multidisciplinary approach combining environmental chemistry, ecotoxicology, and material science. A new sorbent (ABC) will be developed to effectively bind both long- and short-chain PFAS, and its performance will be assessed not only through chemical analysis of PFAS concentrations in leachate but also through comprehensive toxicity testing. This includes in-vivo tests with aquatic organisms, in-vitro cell-based bioassays, and in-silico QSAR modeling. The feasibility and cost-effectiveness of applying this method at operational landfill sites will be evaluated in collaboration with industry partners. The project aims to deliver practical outcomes to support landfill operators and regulators in developing science-based remediation strategies and risk assessment standards.
