Research project L1 talkers’ adaptation to L2 speech

L1 talkers’ adaptation to L2 speech. Computational and experimental approaches to vowel perception. This project investigates how the speech perception system deals with the fact that we all differ in our pronunciation.

More specifically, it tries to understand what happens when we encounter an unfamiliar talker whose pronunciation deviates from our expectations. We know from previous research that we are initially slower and less accurate in understanding accented talkers, but this disadvantage can be reduced remarkably quickly. What mechanism underlie these adjustments have yet not been established.

The project investigates whether distributional learning might be the underlying mechanism supporting listeners’ ability to adapt to an unfamiliar talker, through experimental and computational approaches to vowel perception in Swedish and English.
