Research project Literary depictions of domesticity and architecture in Swedish journals from the 1930´s

In this project, within the field of spatial literary studies, I analyze how domesticity, modern architecture and ideas of a good home are depicted in short stories from Swedish journals from the 1930´s.

The aim is to shed light on how ideas about the home and domesticity are depicted during a pivotal time in Swedish modern history. In 1930 the modernist building style was introduced in Sweden and, being incorporated into the social democrat idea of a good society, it had a remarkable impact during the following decades. In my research Swedish short stories from the 1930´s are analyzed with focus on how architecture and domesticity is depicted and discussed. The project results will be published in articles. In the first article I analyze short stories from the women´s magazine Idun around 1930, with regards to how modernist architecture, gender roles and architecture are depicted. With this project I want to contribute to spatial literary studies. The project is interdisciplinary and makes use of previous research from fields such as history of ideas, gender theory and architectural history.
