Research project The Ethics of Internationalisation: Language and Hospitality in Swedish University Life
This compilation thesis engages with the language practices and processes entangled with the internationalisation of Swedish university life.
Project description
Study 1
Study 1 examines discursive processes within and about internationalising Swedish HE, through an engagement with policy, debate, and scholarship, as well as with teaching/research staff ‘on the ground’ in a natural sciences department. Multilingual complexities are drawn out and shown to be regimented according to certain ‘orders of visibility’ (Kerfoot and Hyltenstam, 2017).
Study 2
Study 2 explores interactions in and around diverse social sciences classrooms, which reveal the potential for ’spaces of otherwise’ (Povinelli 2012) that allow for more ethical engagement across difference.
Study 3
Study 3 considers the changing roles of administrative staff in a humanities department. It re-evaluates the ethical and political dimensions of the notion of hospitality (Derrida 2000), arguing for its critical potential within sociolinguistic research.
