Research subject Islamic Studies
Islamic Studies at Stockholm University is a multifaceted discipline in the history of religions. It includes research concerning how Islam has been interpreted and practiced in different historical periods as well as different cultural settings globally, from the beginning of Islam to the present.
The profile is interdisciplinary and includes both historical and philological as well as ethnographic studies. Various fields are included in Islamic Studies, such as theological, juridical, philosophical and political interpretations and practices of Islam. The Islamic Studies scholars strive to understand and explain the data of study in a contextualized manner. Research projects include a broad spectra of research topics, ranging from the formative era of Islam in a late antiquity context, to the present where Islam appears as a global political phenomenon.
