Stockholm university

Stockholm University has a long tradition of research which puts relations between men and women into focus. Gender historians today also problematize other types of power dynamics connected to social categories such as class, age, sexuality or ethnicity.

The gender history research field allows for meetings between historians working with a range of time periods, source materials and research perspectives, from medieval times to late 20th century. Here, research forms new understandings of how gender relations have played a part in social structures and human interactions in the past - in private as well as public arenas.

Swedish 20th century politics, feminist ideas, activism and equality, body, sports and health, history of emotions, masculinity and gender within military and defense politics are some of the areas of speciality at the Department of History. Perspectives of gender history are also integrated into the education offered at the department.

Researchers and advanced students with an interest in the field gather through the Gender History Seminars, where texts, research plans and issues are presented and constructively discussed.
