Research subject Contemporary and Historical Developments of Journalism

Journalism finds itself in constant flux. To understand the challenges that contemporary journalism faces, an historical understanding of the formation of the journalistic field, its professional norms, ethical ideals and political and economic dependencies is key.

Research at JMK illuminates this through longitudinal studies of variations in journalistic content over time, and through case studies of editorial strategies and editorial decision-making – often in connection to crises, wars and conflicts. Global and transnational news, constructive journalism, the development of public service media, photojournalism, cultural journalism, migration and racism, political scandals and the influence of think-tanks on journalism are examples of areas where JMK's research is prominent.
