Research subject History of Philosophy
Stockholm University has a long standing reserach in History of Philosophy. One of the focus areas of the research in the history of philosophy, broadly speaking, Western Europe from classical Greek antiquity through late antiquity in the Roman empire through to Latin Middle Ages and the early modern period.
Much of our research has focused on the history of theories of knowledge, both as to what kinds of knowledge there are and how the possibility of knowledge has been challenged and doubted in various forms of scepticism. Other areas of specialization include the history of logic, the history of science and scientific explanation, the theories of the nature of the soul and its cognitive capacities, human happiness or good life, as well as the philosophy of food and the theories about the nature and moral status of non-human animals. Methodologically speaking, we combine the aims for historical accuracy and context sensitivity with the analysis of arguments and concern for contemporary relevance.
