Research focusing on dialogue, interaction and spoken and written discourse is a dynamic field that has developed considerably over the past two decades within the Romance linguistics research network at Stockholm University.

Both institutional and informal spoken languages in different types of activities, as well as different genres of written discourse, have been the subject of research.

For the Spanish part, the focus has been mainly on pragmatic aspects (discourse markers and other modalities) and the use of multiword structures in speech. Extensive research has been conducted in the area of intercultural communication and sociopragmatics. Spanish as heritage languages is an emerging research area.

Language education is a research field that is closely linked to other languages. Within Spanish, research is conducted concerning motivation among Spanish students in Sweden. A large part of second language research has direct relevance to language education.
