Fashion and Sustainability

What strategies are there in the fashion industry to achieve sustainable production and consumption? Stand alone course on advanced level/second cycle

The course deals with various problems in the fashion industry as well as the strategies that are applied in order to achieve a more sustainable production and consumption. Themes such as green washing, recycling and second hand, among others, are analyzed from a global perspective. The course covers different production conditions and consumption practices and their significance for resource use, environmental emissions and the path to a more sustainable lifestyle.

  • Course structure

    After completing the course, the student is expected to be able to: • Identify the different problems that production and consumption of clothing and fashion are associated with • Discuss and analyze the different concepts used in the sustainability debate • Explore important strategies that can contribute to more sustainable production and consumption • Reflect on the outcome of different types of measures and strategies

    Teaching format

    Teaching takes place in the form of lectures, seminars and workshops. All teaching is in English and is compulsory. For more detailed information, please refer to the course description.

    Assessment

    a. The course is examined in English through a home writing and an oral presentation. For more detailed information, please refer to the course description.
    b. Grading takes place according to a goal-related seven-point grading scale: A = Excellent, B = Very good, C = Good, D = Satisfactory, E = Sufficient, Fx = Insufficient, F = Completely insufficient.
    c. The written grading criteria are communicated to the students at the start of the course.
    d. To obtain a passing grade for the entire course, a minimum grade of E is required for home writing, an approved oral presentation and that the student has met the requirement of 80% compulsory attendance. If there are special reasons, the examiner may, after consultation with the responsible teacher, grant the student exemption from the obligation to participate in certain compulsory teaching, the student may then be imposed a compensation assignment. In the event of late submission of an examination to the examiner, the student may not receive a higher grade than D.
    e. For each course opportunity, at least two examination opportunities must be available during the current semester. At least one examination opportunity must also be offered in the semester or year in which the course opportunity is missing. Students who have received the lowest grade E may not undergo a re-examination for higher grades. Students who have received the grade Fx or F on an examination twice in a row by one and the same examiner have the right to have another examiner appointed at the next examination, unless special reasons militate against it. Requests for this must be made to the department board.
    f. Completion of the examination can be allowed if the student is close to the limit for passing, ie Fx. The assignment must be submitted within one week after the need for completion has been announced by the examiner. When approving the completion of deficiencies of an understanding nature - misunderstandings, minor errors or in some respects too limited reasoning - the grades D-E are used.

  • Schedule

    The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.
