Politics, Democracy and Citizenship – Social Studies Education Research Traditions in the Nordic Context
This course at advanced level is primarily aimed at you who are active teachers or master's students in the Nordic context, as well as internationally. The course is given entirely digitally and in English.
Out of a Nordic perspective, the social studies subjects - history, social science, religious education and geography, are analysed and discussed in terms of their qualifying, socialising and subjectifying role and potential in society and in the lives of young people today.
The course deals with the content of the school subjects in the Nordic countries and how they are discussed in related subject didactic traditions, with specific focus on their normative assignment in terms of politics or policy, democracy and citizenship, laid down by law and regulation. The starting point is taken in the knowledge content of the subjects and the explicit value-related aspects the subjects are provided at different educational levels, through different actors and contexts, mirrored through the school subjects' specific didactic ideas.
In the course, we process concrete examples from subject didactic research in the Nordic countries, where both critical and teaching-related perspectives are treated.
