The Representational Power of Journalism

This course is aimed at students who want to develop a critical understanding of how journalism can be seen as an institutionalized form of meaning-making practice, guided by professional conventions and media-specific conditions. This MA course can be part of MA programme in Journalism Studies or as a Stand Alone Course. Taught in English

Journalism has historically held an influential position in society, as journalistic decisions regarding perspectives, sources, and framing have shaped the boundaries of public discourse. The course emphasizes how journalistic constructions of reality have evolved in tandem with technological advancements and how the concept of “news” has become increasingly complex and challenging to define in the digital media landscape.

  • Course structure

    For a passing result on the course, the student must be able to:
    - report on relevant theory building and research on journalism's constructions of reality, - critically and systematically analyze journalism's portrayals and frameworks and their societal, political and social meanings.

    Teaching format

    Teaching consists of lectures and seminars. Course requirements: seminars are mandatory elements of the course.
    The teaching takes place in English.

    The course is examined through an individual exam and written assignments

    The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.

    Department of Media Studies and Section for Journalism, Media and Communication Studies is located off campus in central Stockholm close to both nature and for instance Public Service Radio and Television.
