This Master’s level course provides knowledge about basic statistical methods and tools used in linguistic research.
Statistics for Linguists provides knowledge about basic statistical methods and statistical tools used in the field of linguistics. Implementation of statistical methods in software is an important part of the course.
The primary focus is on the following areas:
- Descriptive statistics; measures of location and dispersion
- Probability distributions
- Statistical modelling
- Regression and correlation
- Inferential statistics and analysis of significance.

Course structure
Teaching format
Instruction is given in the form of lectures and teacher led laboratory sessions.
Assessment
The course is examined on the basis of written assignments and a take-home examination.
