Air Quality - From Emissions to Impacts

All over the world we struggle with polluted air, which can affect both human health and our environment. In this course you will learn why air pollution occurs, how it affects our health and the environment and what can be done to solve air-quality related problems.

Halo 1

This course explores air pollution holistically, from its sources to its impacts to the broader questions of how its effects can be abated and the repercussions of regulation. An understanding of the nature and sources of air pollution in both outdoor and indoor environments will allow you to interpret the causes of an air quality problem and suggest ways to improve it. You will also become acquainted with the application of air-quality related legislation and learn more about the significance of air quality for human health and the environment.

Topics covered include:

  • The predominant sources of outdoor and indoor air pollution
  • Transformation and deposition of air pollutants outdoors
  • Movement of air pollutants and ventilation for improvement of indoor air quality
  • Deposition of particles and gases in the respiratory system
  • Health and environmental impacts of air pollutants
  • Societal costs and health impacts of air pollution
  • Policy instruments to control and improve air quality and their negative and positive impacts.
