Lived Religion: Representation and Practise
The course concerns knowledge about lived religion, with a special focus on contemporary Islam.
Through theoretical, methodological and empirical studies, the students will gain knowledge about the field of lived religion, especially Islam. The theoretical parts are complemented with field studies in Istanbul. The students will gain knowledge and insights in how Islam is officially represented today in, for example, museums and sites of worship. The field visits will also include sites of “lived Islam” in Istanbul, such as places of pilgrimage, saint shrines and Sufi lodges. The course will illustrate the multifaceted world of lived Islam, using Istanbul as an ethnographic site, and give students the analytical skills to explain contemporary expressions of Islam.
