Critical performance theories I
This is a course within the International Master's Programme in Performance Studies.
The course provides an in-depth introduction to performance studies as an academic research field as well as its histories and genealogies. Special attention is paid to the interdisciplinary emergence of performance studies in interaction with anthropology, performance art, and gender studies. The course, which works with a broad understanding of theatre, performing arts and performance, introduces central theories and concepts within performance studies. It thematizes how performance not only denotes an object of study, but can also be applied as a methodological tool to critically think about and generate knowledge about performing arts events, bodily practices and social processes.
