Forskning
This dissertation project will study the altarpieces of the Flanders region, imported to Sweden during the first half of the 16th century, and will investigate the narrative construction of the complete imagery of the altarpiece, consisting of panel paintings, and gilded and polychrome wooden sculpture. The project aims to investigate the visual presentation of biblical narratives during the late Middle Ages, as well as the rhetoric of the visual language. The narrative composition will also be studied as the cultural translation of a local discourse or agenda, relating the research material and the craft of the Flemish artists to the site-specific needs of local clergymen in urban and rural Sweden. With this project, I hope to provide further insight into the visual culture of the Middle Ages, and to illuminate the diversity of medieval art in Sweden.
