Ulf Fredriksson is an Associate Professor of Education at the Institute of International Education (IIE) at the Department of Education, Stockholm University.

Ulf is a trained primary school teacher as well as a secondary school teacher of civics and history. He has taught in schools in Sweden, in the municipalities of Västerås and Haninge (in the Stockholm region). He has studied subjects within behavioural science and social science and has a Ph.D. in International and Comparative Education from the Institute of International Education, Stockholm University ("Reading skills among students of immigrant origin in Stockholm"). He has earlier worked for the Swedish teacher union (Lärarför­bundet) as Education Secretary and International Secretary; at the headquarters of Educa­tion International (the international federation of teacher organisations), in Brussels as Education and Research Coordinator; as a Researcher at CRELL (Centre for Research on Lifelong Learning) at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission in Ispra, Italy; as Senior Lecturer at the Education Department at Mid Sweden University and as Associate Professor and Deputy Head at the Department of Language Education at Stockholm University.

His research has focused on reading, students of immigrant background, learning to learn, the use of ICT in schools and comparative and international education. He has participated in several studies of students reading skills in different municipalities and in PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment). Within PISA, he is responsible for the Swedish part of the study dealing with students' reading comprehension. During his time at CRELL he worked with a project defining the concept learning to learn and with developing methods to measure learning to learn, as well as projects related to teachers´ status and professional development. During 2004-2005 and 2007-2008 he participated in part one and two of the ELFE (European eLearning Forum for Education)-project, studying innovative use of ICT in schools in Denmark, Germany Latvia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and United Kingdom. During 2009-2010, he was a member of an expert group selected by the OECD with the task to give advice to the Mexican ministry of education on teacher policy and teacher education.

He received the 2003 Award from Eve Malmquist Fund for Reading Research. He is a member of the reference group in the Swedish part of the PIRLS (Progress in International Reading Literacy Studies) study and a member of the Board of Directors of the Education International Research Institute in Brussels.

    This study examined the curriculums and implementation of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in upper secondary schools in Japan and Sweden and examined and compared the policies and cases of ESD practice. The comparison showed that ESD is present in the national curriculums of both countries, but is emphasized differently. In Sweden, it is more a matter of mentioning ESD as part of the principles that guide education, while in Japan, the integration of ESD into the subject syllabus is emphasized. The schools visited strove to implement ESD in their work. ESD is not an exclusive approach in addition to other school activities, but rather a central part of the schools´ work. Many issues are included under the umbrella of ESD, not only environmental issues. International contacts are one of the most important elements of the work, but this does not exclude local engagement. In fact, the schools have established impressive networks. Project work is an important approach in supporting students’ learning about sustainable development. A prerequisite for the successful work of the schools, which all have a certain reputation in the field of ESD, is the dedication of the teachers and the equally dedicated principals who support the work.
