Titel: Bridging the Hellespont: Migrations ancient and modern
Open lecture by Professor Tim Whitmarsh, University of Cambridge, Faculty of Classics
Abstract: The Hellespont — the narrow strip of sea between modern Turkey and the Thracian peninsula — has throughout history played an important symbolic role as the place where the continents of Europe and Asia divide. But geography is not destiny, and the stories that cluster around this strait are surprisingly varied. This talk explores the surprising variety of ways in which the Hellespont had been bridged, from antiquity to modernity, from Homer to David Bowie.
