The department offers education and research in unique environments at several different laboratories and excavation-courses. The department is one of the leading research areas at Stockholm University.
The Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies was created through a merger in 2005 of, the Department of Archaeology and the Department of Classical Archaeology and Ancient History.
On 17–18 September, researchers from the University of Southampton and Stockholm University will carry out high-resolution 3D scanning of the Mary Rose, Henry VIII’s flagship preserved in Portsmouth.
The Journal of Nordic Archaeological Science (JONAS) publishes original theoretical and applied papers by experienced and younger researchers within the field of archaeological science, a cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary branch of archaeology.
Researchers have identified a shipwreck off Porkkala in the Gulf of Finland as the warship Falken. The ship was built for King Gustav II Adolf and was later used under Queen Kristina. It played a central role in the Swedish navy – both in combat and for transporting high-ranking people.
