Our courses are designed in close connection with research and contain applications and field elements.
The Department of Human Geography provides two bachelor's programmes, three master's programmes and one post-graduate programme as well as a number of courses in geography, human geography and urban and regional planning. In addition, the Department participates in several programmes and courses for which other departments are primarily responsible.
Geography
Global and local changes take place at a rapid pace today. Are you interested in climate change, transition to more sustainable energy forms, various environmental problems, migration flows, urbanization and globalization? Then geography is your subject!
Issues such as these are studied historically and interdisciplinary with natural science and social science united. You gain knowledge about human living conditions in relation to, for example, food and water supply, land use, natural disasters and resource conflicts.

Bachelor's level
Bachelor's programme in Geography
The Bachelor's Programme in Geography leads to a bachelor's degree in geography. The geography courses are taught by teachers from the two geographical departments, the Department of Physical Geography and the Department of Human Geography. Programmes and courses in geography at first level are given at the Department of Physical Geography.

The Master's Programme in Globalization, Environment and Social Change leads to a master's degree in Geography. The program is given in English.

Courses
At advanced level, courses in geography are offered by both geographical departments, see "Search among our courses" for each department. Some courses are given by the Department of Physical Geography and other courses by the Department of Human Geography.
Both departments offer courses that include degree projects for master's degrees, but please note that the Department of Human Geography only offers, among other things, the course Geography, degree project, 30 credits, within the Master's programme in Globalization, Environment and Social Change, while the Department of Natural Geography also offers degree project courses independently.
Teacher education
Geography teachers are trained within the Teacher Secondary School/Supplementary Teacher Education at Stockholm University and at universities of applied sciences, for example the Swedish School of Sports and Health Sciences (GIH), where geography studies take place at Stockholm University.

Human Geography
Are you interested in maps, in how the landscape has come about and how globalisation affects our daily lives? Then the field of human geography might just be for you.
Human geography is about the relations between people and places.
A starting point is that all human activities take place somewhere and that this is crucial for how we can understand and analyse both local phenomena and global processes.
Bachelor's level
There are four options for those who want to study for a bachelor's degree in Human Geography.
Bachelor's programme
The first option is the Bachelor's Programme in Human Geography – Society, Environment and Global Processes, which leads to a Bachelor's degree in Human Geography.
Bachelor's programme in Human Geography – Society, Environment and Global Processes, 180 credits
The second option is to choose the Bachelor's Programme in Urban and Regional Planning and within the program choose courses so that the requirements for the bachelor's degree in Human Geography are also met, and the third option is to choose the Cultural Studies programme, bachelor's programme, and within the programme choose cultural geography as the main field.

Courses
The fourth option for obtaining a bachelor's degree in Human Geography is to study free standing courses. Then you first apply for the course package Human Geography I, which contains the first semester's four courses.

Master's level
Master's programme
The programme leads to a Master’s degree in Human Geography. The programme is given in English.
Master's Programme in Human Geography, 120 credits
The International Master's programme in Environmental Social Science can lead to a master's degree in Human Geography with a focus on Environmental Social Science studies. The programme is given in English and the Department of Political Science is the hosting department.
Another option is the Master's programme in Medieval studies with a specialization in Human Geography, which leads to a master's degree in the main field of Human Geography. The Master's programme in Medieval Studies is partly taught in Swedish and the host institution is the Department of History.

Urban and Regional Planning
Are you interested in how cities and regions function and transform? Do you want to develop plans and strategies for a sustainable society? Urban and Regional Planning is about shaping and structuring the future of society.
In planning, you study different issues on the development and future of society, such as land-use, climate and environment, use of resources, local and regional economic development, urban-rural relations, demography, democracy, housing and mobility.

The Bachelor's Programme in Urban and Regional Planning leads to a Bachelor of Science degree and gives eligibility to the Master’s level in Urban and Regional Planning and other Masters’ programmes.

Doctoral Studies
The department offers a Post-Graduate Programme in Geography with a Specialization in Human Geography. The programme consists of four years of full-time studies and is usually combined with departmental service for a year. The studies includes writing a doctoral thesis and courses. As a doctoral student, you are usually employed at the department.
