Dr. Juan Carlos Cruz Suárez, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Romance Studies and Classics, shares his reflections on what makes studying languages at the Master’s level in Sweden such a rewarding experience.

“Teaching at the Master’s level enables the development and deepening of all aspects related to the discipline,” says Dr. Cruz Suárez. “Students already have a strong foundation, which allows us to explore conceptual, theoretical, and analytical elements in greater depth. In the literature courses I teach, students at this level are familiar with key concepts and theoretical frameworks essential for the analysis of literary texts. For example, when we explore a literary work through a postcolonial or New Historicist lens, students already have a solid grounding in these theories, which we then apply in class discussions and written analyses.”

 “I can also observe different approaches to studying: some students have a stronger theoretical background, while others tend to be more analytical or approach learning in a more relational manner” says Dr. Cruz Suárez.

I do this by reminding students that everything they do - every step they take in their personal and academic development - is a step forward in their journey towards professionalization and achieving their individual goals. I believe the most effective way to motivate students is precisely this: to help them remember why knowledge is so valuable, enriching, and ultimately transformative.”
He adds, “Studying a language opens the mind to new ways of seeing the world. It is a unique opportunity for personal and professional growth - and it is genuinely enjoyable to communicate in other languages!”
