Studying the relationship between students' functional thinking and algebra performance
2024. Anneli Blomqvist. Proceedings of the 47th Conference of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 254-254
ConferenceThe poster focuses on the relationship between students’ performance on five tasks analysed to involve functional thinking and 24 tasks analysed to involve other algebra aspects. Results on these tasks from 1623 students were analysed using multiple regression analysis to ascertain to what extent the student’s performance on functional thinking tasks (FTT) can account for their performance on algebra tasks (AT). The results indicate that four of the five FTT together explain 52% of the variation in students’ performance on AT.

What is functional thinking? An ontological analysis of different definitions
2024. Anneli Blomqvist, Lovisa Sumpter. Proceedings of the 47th Conference of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 109-109
ConferenceThis paper focuses on functional thinking's definition from an ontological perspective. There are many definitions of functional thinking, and it is unclear how and in what ways different theoretical operationalisations of the concept are related. The preliminary results come from functional thinking definitions used in papers published between 2002 and 2022, which were analysed using an AI tool. The interpretation and analysis generated three main results.
