Research seminar: Interaction between speech and language
Seminar
Date: Thursday 22 February 2024
Time: 15.00 – 16.30
Location: Room C307, Department of Linguistics
Anna Eva Hallin, Assistant Professor in the division of Speech and Language Pathology at Karolinska Institutet, presents at the seminar, on the topic "Interaction between speech and language: Narratives in children with speech sound disorders".
Abstract
Speech and language are interconnected systems, and speech sound disorders (SSDs) often co-occur with language disorder. Potential trade-off effects between speech and language in connected speech in children without overt language disorder have been less explored. In this study, we investigate whether speech accuracy (percent phonemes correct [PPC]) predict linguistic variables in story retell narratives in children with and without SSDs. Results showed significant relationships between PPC and all linguistic variables, and a higher-than-expected occurrence of linguistic errors in narratives from children with SSD, which might indicate a trade-off. Results are discussed in the light of models of speech and language and cognitive load theory.
