Research project Y-SLOSH

Y-SLOSH is the Stress Research Institute's study of the development of mental illness in young people, and possible underlying factors, related to the establishment in the labour market. The project is based on surveys sent out to a sample of 25 500 15–29-year-olds in Sweden.

Young-SLOSH (Y-SLOSH) is the youth version of the Swedish Longitudinal Occupational Survey of Health (SLOSH). The project, which is funded by Forte, is based on surveys that in a first stage were sent out in the spring of 2024 to a sample of 19,618 people in Sweden, born 1995–2006 (17–29 years at the time of the survey).

The aim of Y-SLOSH is to collect data and analyse mental health in relation to, among other things

  • daily employment (including education and unemployment)
  • quality of study and work environment
  • perceived social demands
  • social relationships (including family formation)
  • health behaviours
  • outlook on the future.

Study participants are initially invited to participate in surveys in 2024, 2025 and 2026, and are included in the SLOSH cohort when they reach the age of 30. Both SLOSH and Y-SLOSH can also be linked to register data. This creates the opportunity to study longitudinal, potentially causal relationships, while keeping the survey shorter.

The study is expected to contribute knowledge about the causes of, among other things, mental ill health, stress, burnout and difficulties for the participants in establishing themselves in working life during the critical transition from youth to adulthood.
