Research subject French Second Language Acquisition
An interdisciplinary field of research, drawing on linguistics, as well as psychology, education and other social sciences. Research in second language acquisition aims primarily to understand development in an additional language that one learns as a teenager or adult and how second language acquisition differs from first language acquisition.
Research on the acquisition of French as a second language has a long tradition at the Department of Romance Studies and Classics at Stockholm University. An important amount of internationally recognized research has been conducted on the development of various grammatical, lexical and pragmatic phenomena in spoken French among Swedish-speaking learners. In recent years, research has drawn more on methods from the social sciences and examines the importance of social and psychological factors for adults' second language learning, the importance of different learning environments (formal / natural / Study Abroad) and pedagogical issues, such as factors influencing academic achievement in language studies.
