Fysikum physicists among winners of prestigious Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics

Scientists from Stockholm University are among the worldwide researchers honored with the 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, awarded to the ATLAS Collaboration at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) alongside its sister experiments ALICE, CMS and LHCb. The prize was founded in 2012 by Yuri Milner to recognize those individuals who have made profound contributions to human knowledge.

Ludvig Doeser is the winner of Magnus Axelsson Prize 2024

Ludvig Doeser studied Engineering Physics at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in parallel with hosting exhibitions at Tom Tits in his spare time. During his master programme he was an exchange student in the USA. In 2021, he did his thesis with Jens Jasche and collaborated with Magnus Axelsson at Fysikum. Since January 2022 he is a PhD student at the division of Cosmology, Astroparticle Physics and String Theory - COPS. He teaches and is responsible for the outreach event FysikShow. Ludvig is awarded this year's prize because he intends to introduce FysikShow's experiments into physics teaching.

Turning the ghostly substance into actual light

Postdoctor Andrea Gallo is a researcher in astroparticle physics at Fysikum, Stockholm University. He was born in Turin, Italy, and in 2019 he did his PhD at the Gran Sasso Science Institute in L’Aquila. In March 2021 he came to Stockholm and Fysikum. He's now working in the ALPHA experiment. Together with Jan Conrad he will be working on a project developing a framework for the simulation and analysis of axion experiments (dubbed ASSAI). The project is funded by a grant of the Olle Engkvist foundation.

Shedding new light on dark matter

No one has yet managed to show what dark matter is made of, even though it appears to make up over 80 percent of the mass in the universe. At Stockholm University a new kind of sensor is being built to study hypothetical particles called axions. If these invisible particles do in fact exist, they may provide a solution to the mystery of dark matter.

Report from the NornDip conference

This year the conference was given at the University of Bergen in Norway, May 7-8. The theme of the conference was “Smoothening the bumpy road – on gender microagressions”. During the conference seminars on physics was mixed with seminars on gender and diversity topics.

New experiment aims to turn the ghostly substance into actual light

A ghost is haunting our universe. This has been known in astronomy and cosmology for decades. Observations suggest that about 85% of all the matter in the universe is mysterious and invisible. Sara Strandberg on Wallenberg Scholar and the Higgs particle

The Wallenberg Scholars program supports and stimulates some of the most successful senior researchers at Swedish universities. The grant is for five years with the possibility of a five-year extension. There are currently 88 active Wallenberg Scholars and Emil Bergholtz was recently appointed. Sara Strandberg received a five-year extension. On April 12, Sara participated in the Swedish Radio program Vetenskapsradion on the topic of the Higgs particle.

March 8 is International Women's Day and today we want to highlight women in physics. There are many examples including Marie Curie, Maria Goeppert Mayer and Lise Meitner to Fabiola Gianotti and Lene Hau. We also mention some of the female professors of physics who belong to the Fysikum.

A scientific train journey to CERN with Sara Strandberg

On 15 April, the train departs from Stockholm to Geneva and cicerones are particle physicist Professor Sara Strandberg from Fysikum and science journalist Anna Davour from Forskning & Framsteg. Participants will learn more about the smallest components of our matter with quarks, leptons and other elementary particles. CERN is the world's largest particle physics laboratory and home to the Large Hadron Collider - the world's largest particle accelerator.

OKC15 - an anniversary for physics research that lasted for three days

The Oskar Klein Centre is celebrating 15 years with an anniversary that took place on October 17-19 2023. OKC is a hub and network for physics research in Stockholm. The scientific conference covered topics in cosmology, astrophysics and particle physics. "It has been great to celebrate our successes with all our colleagues both in Sweden and the Nordic countries as well as our alumni", says Professor Ariel Goobar, Director.

The first neutrino image of our galaxy

For the first time, researchers have produced an image of the Milky Way using neutrinos, which were observed with the IceCube telescope in the Antarctic ice. The neutrino image suggests that cosmic ray interactions are more intense in the center of our galaxy than once thought. The results are published in the journal Science.

IceCube neutrinos provide new view of a nearby galaxy

For the first time, an international team of scientists has found evidence of high-energy neutrino emission from a nearby galaxy. The galaxy, NGC 1068 (also known as Messier 77) is an active galaxy in the constellation Cetus and one of the most familiar and well-studied active galaxies. The results are published in Science.
