Research subject Digital and Multimodal Anthropology
Digital anthropology covers studies of digitalisation in different cultural contexts and their global connections, as well as multimodal forms of anthropological knowledge production.
Research on digitalisation spans the world, from Indonesian click farms in the global gig economy to algorithms in the Swedish welfare system. Critical investigations of the political economy of mobile and digital infrastructure have complemented studies on Internet and public spheres, its development and globalisation. Research on social media such as Facebook and Instagram have probed new forms of social interaction and identity formation, online social activism as well as the creation of visual cultural heritage. Researchers are also exploring digital, visual and sensory methods, resulting in multimodal forms of knowledge, which are often shared on blogs and social media platforms such as Instagram and YouTube.
