The course contains sixth semester studies in Arabic with Middle East and North African studies and leads to a bachelor's degree in the Middle East's language and cultures.

Welcome activities

Within this course you will work with your degree project. The course also gives an overview of the academic study of the Arabic language, with a focus on linguistics and the history of the Arabic language, as well as in-depth studies in theory and method.

  • Course structure

    The course contains three modules.

    Modules

    Language and Society, 7.5 credits
    Language is a central part of society. This module focuses on language as a linguistic system and language as a social phenomenon. The student will learn basic linguistic principles and will be introduced to sociolinguistics as an academic subject. The student will gain knowledge of the languages ​​of the Middle East and North Africa, with a special focus on Arabic and will be introduced to issues such as the basic principles of linguistics and sociolinguistics, language variation, attitudes to languages, language policy, colloquialism, gender and social groups.

    Theory and method, 7.5 credits
    Within the framework of this module, the student will, in consultation with a supervisor, choose a scientific theoretical or methodological discourse and read and analyze literature that deals with the relevant theory and method and provide an overview of previous research and empirical data.

    Degree project, 15 credits
    In this module, the student must write a degree project in the main area of Middle Eastern languages and cultures. The course deals with the formal and theoretical requirements of a degree project and gives the student practice in independently and critically producing a scientific study.

    Teaching format

    The teaching consists of lectures and seminars.

    Teaching sessions are compulsory.

    Within the framework of the module Degree Project, 15 credits, individual supervision and group supervision are given.
