Astronomy, Degree Project

The degree project aims to give you deeper insights in and experience with scientific research. You will plan, execute and report an original research project. You will produce a scientific report and present your research results orally in a scientific seminar.

This course normally constitutes the completion of your master studies in astronomy and the report is also known as your master thesis. The degree project should be seen as an internship in a research group for half a year during which you will execute a research project but will also become part of the group and experience what it is like to work in a research environment. The project will contain new research and in some cases will lead to the publication of a scientific article.

  • Course structure

    The course is given every term and can be taken either as a full time or 50% course. It is part of the master programme in astronomy but can also be read as a separate course if you fulfill the eligibility requirements. The research project will make use of English

    Together with your supervisor you will produce a description of the planned research project which has to be approved by the examination group.

    Teaching format

    The research internship does not involve any scheduled teaching as your project will be individual. You will meet your supervisor for at least one hour every week to receive guidance.

    Assessment

    The examination will be in the form of both a written scientific report and an oral presentation in the form of  a scientific seminar.

  • Schedule

    This is a preliminary schedule and is subject to continuous change. For this reason, we do not recommend print-outs. At the start of the course, your institution will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.

    There are no scheduled events in this course.

  • Course literature

    Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.

    Every research project has its own literature list which you will initially be given by your supervisor and later on will expand on your own. This literature can consist of (parts of) textbooks and scientific articles.
