Introduction to Global Political Economy

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of global political economy (GPE).

Questions relevant in today's GPE are examined from a historical perspective. Students are provided with an in-depth understanding of the various stages and changes in the global world order, starting from the 14th century and progressing to the present. The course places particular emphasis on developments after 1945, focusing on current shifts in areas such as trade, new markets, monetary and financial systems, gender politics, and environmental issues, as well as local and global governance. Throughout the course, students will engage in critical analysis of these topics, using various theoretical tools for reflection

  • Course structure

    Teaching format

    The teaching consists of lectures and seminars.

    Attendance at seminars is mandatory. In case of absence, supplementation is made in accordance with the course convener's instructions. No more than a quarter of the seminars can be compensated.

    The language of teaching is English.

    Learning outcomes

    For a passing grade in the course, the student must:

    • Possess knowledge and understanding of theoretical frameworks within the field of global political economy
    • Be able to use theoretical/conceptual tools to analyze global political economy
    • Be able to conduct an independent analysis and critically assess others' scientific work within the field of global political economy.

    Assessment

    The course is assessed through (1) written and/or oral tasks and (2) participation in seminars. For further information, please refer to the course description.

    The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.
