Qualitative Methods

The course provides the student with knowledge of qualitative research concepts and techniques that prepare them for independent research and development work on advanced (master's) level.

The course addresses scientific considerations, epistemology, theory, methodology, and methods, with a focus on the latter two.

Within the framework of designing a social science research project, the course covers the following themes: developing knowledge about qualitative methods, working with theory, applying qualitative methods, assessing sources, and being able to communicate the results in writing.

Important Notice: From the Autumn term of 2023 onwards, this course will be available only to students enrolled in the department's master's programmes.

  • Course structure

    Teaching format

    The teaching consists of lectures and seminars.

    Attendance at seminars is mandatory. In case of absence, supplementation is made in accordance with the course convener's instructions. No more than one-fourth of the seminars can be compensated.

    The language of teaching is English.

    Learning outcomes

    In order to obtain a passing grade in the course, the student must be able to:

    • Account for and discuss the most important methodological issues in social science research.
    • Critically examine research in economic history and international relations where qualitative methods are used.
    • Apply qualitative methods in connection with research questions and relate them to both theoretical framework and empirical material to build a cohesive research process.
    • Assess the quality of sources to answer research questions.
    • Demonstrate awareness of ethical aspects of research work.

    The course is assessed through (1) written and/or oral tasks and (2) participation in seminars. For further information, please refer to the course description.

    The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.
