French Travellers in Mediterranean Lands
How do we present the foreign and the unfamiliar in travel literature? Is it possible to discern patterns in the way you meet "the other" in documentary and fictional texts? Broaden and deepen your knowledge of images of different cultures linked to Mediterranean lands provided by French-speaking travelers!
The course covers both fictional and non-fictional travel literature written in French during several centuries, and which all have in common that they describe meetings in and around the Mediterranean. A selection of texts are studied from a variety of perspectives: ideological, cultural, aesthetic, historical, theoretical… Overall, they provide a fascinating and enlightening image of cultural encounters throughout history as well as regards coping with cultural heritage and forming literary representations.
