Japanese Popular Culture: Expression and Consumption
The course examines global and local conceptions of Japanese popular culture through the lens of anime/animation studies and games studies.
It questions the relevance of the very concept of ‘popular culture’ for the 21st century from the perspective of recent Japan-oriented media studies. It highlights issues that recur across popular media, such as playfulness, conventionality and critique, otaku, shōjo and kawaii.
All teaching and examination at the Department of Asian, Middle Eastern and Turkish Studies will continue to be web-based throughout autumn semester 2021.
