This track explores climate change through multiple disciplinary lenses, integrating scientific, societal, and policy-driven perspectives. By uniting diverse approaches, it addresses the multifaceted nature of climate challenges and fosters innovative solutions. The study track is tailored for students eager to develop innovative solutions for the climate crisis through collaboration and diverse methodologies.

What to expect
Students will engage with:

  • Holistic perspectives: Exploring the connections between climate science, policy, and society.
  • Collaborative tools: Developing skills in transdisciplinary research and stakeholder engagement.
  • Practical experience: Hands-on projects and case studies addressing real-world climate issues.

Modules include Climate Litigation, Natural Hazard Risk Management, and Climate Policy Development. Fieldwork and transdisciplinary projects are key components.

Participating universities
This track spans three institutions:

  1. Stockholm University (SU, Sweden): Laying the foundation with a transdisciplinary perspective on climate, energy, and environment.
  2. Paris Lodron University of Salzburg (PLUS, Austria): Offering expertise in environmental law and policy.
  3. Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB, Belgium): Specialising in climate change governance and stakeholder collaboration.

Together, these universities provide the tools for students to lead transformative climate action.

  • Programme overview

    The Master's Programme in Transdisciplinary Studies of Climate, Environment and Energy (TRACEE programme) is a two-year Master's Programme, meaning 4 semesters and totally 120 ECTS. 

    After the first common semester you continue on your selected study track. Students choose from nine specialised tracks (60 ECTS) offered across the 11 CIVIS member universities. Read more about the programme and all the nine study tracks on the main programme page here. This page describes track 8 out of 9.

    In the study track Transdisciplinary Approaches to Climate Change students will be introduced to various disciplines that inform the development, adoption and implementation of solutions to the problems posed by climate change, energy transition and environmental issues, based on the transdisciplinary knowledge on climate, energy and environment obtained in the first semester.

    Successful students will be awarded multiple or joint degrees from the partner universities (SU, PLUS, ULB).

    Semester 1, Stockholm University (SU)

    In your first semester at Stockholm University, you’ll develop foundational skills through the course Climate, Energy, and Environment – a Transdisciplinary Perspective (30 ECTS). Read more on the course page.

    Semester 2, Paris Londron University of Salzburg (PLUS)

    • Introduction into Environmental and Climate History (3 ECTS)
    • Climate Litigation (4 ECTS)
    • Mountain Hazards and Risk Management (3 ECTS)
    • Hazards and Risk in an Alpine Setting (5 ECTS)
    • Natural Hazards management – Hands on (3 ECTS)
    • Proxy and Climate Data in Environmental Sciences (3 ECTS)
    • Risk and Tipping Points in the Earth System (6 ECTS)
    • Environment and Society in the Anthropocene (6 ECTS)

    Semester 3, Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB)

    • Action for Change (5 ECTS)
    • Law & Economics of the Environment (5 ECTS)
    • Interdisciplinary Project (5 ECTS)
    • Conditionally Elective courses (3 courses among the list, 15 ECTS):
      • Socio-Environmental Dynamics (5 ECTS)
      • Environmental Impact Analysis and Management (5 ECTS)
      • Circular Economy (5 ECTS)
      • Social-Ecological Systems (5 ECTS)
      • The Life of Environmental Numbers (5 ECTS)

    Semester 4, Master Thesis Project at ULB

    The fourth and last semester is dedicated to the Master's thesis project (30 ECTS). It is registered at ULB.

    Continuous transdisciplinary stream

    An extra-curricular transdisciplinary stream runs through the entire programme. The stream will be offered on site during the first semester in Stockholm, and thereafter online. The purpose of the stream is to engage students in learning about transdisciplinarity, and offer support and checkpoints for development of independent projects. It also offers a meeting point for the whole student group throughout the programme.

    Entry requirement: The Study Track 8 targets students with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

    Please note that you need to apply to a specific study track within the Master's programme (you can apply to several tracks but have to rank your choices as you will be admitted to only one). Read about all the study tracks at the programme page.
     

    Participation cost for the programme:

    • EU/EEA/Switzerland students: €9000 for the full programme (€2250/semester)
    • Non-EU/EEA/Switzerland students: €18,000/year for the full programme (€4500/semester)

    This is the participation cost for the Master's Programme, regardless of chosen study track. The cost is tailored by the uniqe collaboration that is the CIVIS alliance.
