Subject: Computer Science
Computer Science is the science and art of writing efficient, correct, and user friendly programs for computers. This implies that you deal with all kinds of computer related problems and cooperate with many other disciplines that require complex problem solving. As a computer scientist you thereby get a good insight into many disciplines.
The IT society has a large need for people with expert knowledge of computer science, and the computer scientists' education, with the combination of theory and practice, make them well suited to meet these demands. You therefore find computer scientists in all labour sectors. The majority work in developing and in the consulting business, within the private as well as the public sector. Also research work and education in both industry and academy is part of the computer scientists' labour sector. In addition, computer scientists constitute a resource of increasing importance for new assignments in the knowledge and information society.
Apart from single subject courses, the Department also offers a Bachelor's Programme in Computer Science, 180 HECs, and a Master's Programme in Computer Science, 120 HECs.
As a mathematical theory always implies that certain conclusions hold under certain given conditions, it can in principle say nothing about the physical reality. None the less mathematics has become an indispensable tool for a large number of subjects like astronomy, physics, chemistry, statistics and the technical sciences and in later times also for economy, biology, various social sciences and computor science.
The role of mathematics in the applied sciences is both to supply notions for exact and adequate formulations of empirical laws but also from these laws to derive consequences, which can be used to find better models of the reality one has to describe. These tasks have lately become more important.
Mathematics is in continual progress by intensive international research, new theories are created and already existing theories are simplified and augmented.

Mathematical statistics is the subject within applied mathematics that describes and analyses random events.
The foundation is the mathematical probability theory, which goes back to the 17th century, but has in its modern form developed mostly during the 20th century. Probability theory is also the foundation of statistical theory on how to draw conclusions from data with random features. The rise of computer technology has also significantly contributed to broadening the field of applications within mathematical statistics. Today is mathematical statistics one of the most powerful tools in applied mathematics.
Examples that apply mathematical statistics to a large extent are the insurance and finance sectors, biological and medical research (biostatistics) and industrial applications like telecommunications and quality control.
The department cooperates closely both in research and teaching with the pharmaceutical industry, medical institutions and banking and insurance companies. Depending on direction of studies, a student with an exam in mathematical statistics has a good chance to get employment in these sectors.
Mathematical statistics can be studied in elective courses, as a major in a Bachelor's or Master's degree or as a complementary subject. Courses cover both theory and applications in various areas. Mathematical statistics is included in the Bachelor's programmes in Mathematics, Biomathematics and Mathematics and Economics and a major in the Master's programmes in Mathematical statistics, Biostatistics, Finance mathematics and Finance and Actuarial science.
