Course structure
The overarching document for a course is the syllabus. You can find the syllabus in the menu on the right.
This course description explains how we run the course in practice. The syllabus should provide good guidance, but is not exhaustive. Further clarification, either verbal or written, will be provided by the teacher during the course. Do not hesitate to ask the teacher if you have any questions about how to carry out various tasks. To find out which teachers are teaching the course, and for information about the schedule and examination dates, please see ‘Schedule’. For information on literature lists, see ‘Course literature’.
Teaching format
The course unit Written Proficiency focuses on improving your ability to write texts in Portuguese with an emphasis on academic written genres. You will read and practise producing different written genres. You will receive feedback on your texts from both teachers and fellow students, and you will also read and discuss the texts of your fellow students.
The Mediation course unit provides an introduction to the mediation of texts in Portuguese, focusing on the structure of the Portuguese language. You will deepen your knowledge of both language structure and stylistics through translation.
The course unit Portuguese Linguistics covers basic linguistic theory and methodology as applied to Portuguese. It introduces basic concepts of morphosyntax, semantics and pragmatics. The course also presents some of the main features of the development of Portuguese and the main features of the different varieties of Portuguese in the world.
The course unit Portuguese, Literature I includes the study of some contemporary literary works from Portuguese-speaking countries in which the most common literary genres are represented. Special emphasis will be placed on the application of basic narratological concepts, analyses and aspects related to gender, class and ethnicity in different Portuguese-speaking countries.
Assessment
The course unit Written Proficiency, 5 credits, is examined through written assignments and oral presentations.
The course unit Mediation, 5 credits, is examined through a written exam (alternatively a digital examination conducted remotely with live streaming if you study the course online).
The course unit Portuguese Linguistics, 10 credits, is examined through assignments, an oral presentation and a written exam (alternatively assignments, an oral presentation and a digital examination conducted remotely with live streaming if you take the course online).
The course unit Portuguese, Literature I, 10 credits, is examined through assignments and oral presentations with written documentation.
Take-home assignments (i.e. essays, short independent projects and other assignments) must be written in your own words and based on your own reflections on the subject. All quotations must be properly cited with quotation marks and indication of the source. A text must not consist mainly of quotations. These should only be used to illustrate your own reasoning. If sources are missing or very incomplete and the teacher discovers plagiarism, this may lead to a report. Remember to use your own wording even in oral presentations. If there are assignments in the course, they will be checked by a text-matching tool. For general information about cheating and plagiarism, see Stockholm University’s rulebook on regulations for examination and guidelines for disciplinary matters at Stockholm University.
Equipment required for digital examinations conducted remotely with live streaming
Digital examinations conducted remotely with live streaming require a computer (with an internet connection and a microphone) and an external camera. Please read the instructions for digital examinations conducted remotely with live streaming. It is important that you familiarise yourself with these instructions well in advance of the exam.Examiner
