Advanced Research Methods in Performance Studies
This is a course at the International Master’s Programme in Performance Studies.
The course provides in-depth knowledge of scholarly approaches and ethical standards for research. The course also deals with the importance of positionality for analysis and interpretation. Based on current research, central methodological approaches within theatre and performance studies are illustrated, including performance analysis, interview techniques and archival studies. The course also thematizes how performance studies interact with critical theories, including feminism(s), critical race and whiteness studies, critical race theory and queer studies. The students engage in critical readings of previous master’s theses and work on their own research projects. They develop, present and discuss their own research approaches in both oral and written format.
In addition, students will be able to work with research formats such as project development and presentations of essays.
They will develop, present and discuss their own research approaches in a group comprising both Swedenbased and international teachers and students.

Learning outcomes
To successfully pass the course, students are expected to:
- describe and critically discuss central research methods and scholarly approaches within performance studies and the humanities;
- discuss and evaluate the pros and cons of different research methods and their applications;
- show an awareness of and understanding of good research practice;
- critically reflect on and articulate their own research position and agenda;
- articulate their own research project’s contribution to knowledge development;
- demonstrate the ability to collaborate by providing critical and constructive feedback on each other’s research projects;
- write a research plan that takes into account questions about methodology, positioning and research ethics.Teaching format
Instruction is given in the form of seminars, lectures and group exercises. Attendance is mandatory. The language of instruction is English.
Assessment
The course is examined on the basis of a written take-home examination.
