Seminarium av Anton Bonnier:
Trade, food (in)security and cultivation strategies in ancient Attica: new perspectives from pollen data
During the seminar I will provide an update on the ongoing work of the Landscapes, Land Use and Connectivity in Ancient Attica-project (LaConA), which was initiated in 2022 through funding provided by the Swedish Research Council.
The productive potential of Attica and the dependency of grain imports as part of the Classical Athenian economy has been subject of much debate within Classical scholarship since the 19th century. On the whole this extensive body of scholarship, has been successful in highlighting the complexities of agricultural supply systems and the limitations for cereal cultivation in ancient Attica. However, much less attention has been given to actual shifts in agricultural production and specifically how the availability of grain through the Athenian market would have affected local cultivation strategies over time. If we accept that grain (wheat in particular) was commonly imported and was made available through markets in Athens and Attica at sufficiently low prices, we may also discuss how such market availability may have impacted local agricultural production. A possible avenue through which we can explore changes in agriculture is offered by pollen records stemming from soil cores extracted in Attica.
