At the seminar on Tuesday, Julian will present work in progress from his dissertation project, currently titled “Mammalian animals in the sanctuary and beyond: a contextual study of animal remains from Kalaureia (Poros) and sites in the north-eastern Peloponnese (c. 600–100 BC).”

The project explores animal management and human–animal relations at Kalaureia and at sites in the north-eastern Peloponnese during the Archaic–Hellenistic period. It draws on detailed analysis of zooarchaeological material, integrated with other archaeological and textual sources. Kalaureia is known for the Sanctuary of Poseidon and is also attested as a city-state in ancient texts. The multiphase site encompasses several excavated areas, presenting both opportunities and challenges for a comprehensive study of animal remains recovered across the site. In the seminar, I will present ongoing work on the zooarchaeological material recorded to date and outline the current stage of analysis.
