Inspiring exchange: University of Cincinnati students visit the Bolin Centre
On August 18, 2025, the Bolin Centre for Climate Research at Stockholm University welcomed a group of 23 students and three faculty members from the University of Cincinnati’s Department of Environmental and Public Health Sciences. The study visit was part of the department’s Climate and Health learning experience in Scandinavia, which combined cultural activities with academic exchanges on the links between climate change and public health.
The programme at the Bolin Centre was opened by Centre directors, who presented the Centre’s research activities and its engagement in the Stockholm Trio collaboration on climate and health. Professor Paul Zieger (Department of Environmental Science, Stockholm University) gave a presentation on the ARTofMELT2023 Arctic expedition, which investigates the transition from winter to summer in the Arctic and the processes that drive sea ice melt. His presentation was accompanied by film material from the expedition and a demonstration of the mobile aerosol–cloud laboratory that was used during the field campaign. This gave the students a concrete illustration of how scientific instruments and fieldwork connect to broader questions of climate and health.
The visit sparked lively discussions and left a strong impression on the group. In his feedback after returning to the United States, Professor Kermit Davis wrote:
Our students are still raving about the experience in class this fall. We felt the trip was a tremendous success, and we are looking for a return visit next year to Stockholm. The visit to the Bolin Centre was a key component of the overall trip, and specifically learning about the climate-related initiatives. The research presented was truly inspirational to our students and set us up nicely for the rest of the trip.”
Dr. Michelle L. Burbage also reflected on the visit:
I want to echo Kermit’s words. We all had a wonderful time learning about the impactful climate research being conducted. We appreciated the opportunity to visit the Bolin Centre and would love to come back next year! Thank you all so much!!”
The Bolin Centre’s contribution to this international study visit reflects its commitment to the goals outlined in the Bolin Centre Strategic Plan, including advancing interdisciplinary climate research, fostering international collaboration, and strengthening links between science and education. The visit provided an opportunity to showcase research, inspire students, and build lasting educational partnerships.
The University of Cincinnati group plans to return to Stockholm in August 2026, and the Bolin Centre looks forward to continuing this inspiring exchange.
