The emissions of carbon dioxide from ecosystems are known to be higher in warmer climates. But only in sufficiently moist environments where plants and soil organisms are not limited by water availability, as shown in a Nature Ecology & Evolution article with four co-authors from Stockholm University.

The 5th International PalaeoArc Conference and the Bolin Centre RT1-RT3 workshop at KVA

The 5th International PalaeoArc Conference was organized at Stockholm University, The Swedish Museum of Natural History and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences over three days (Monday May 27–Wednesday May 29). It attracted 103 scientists (28% early career) from 17 countries, mainly from Europe but also North America and Asia. The conference was organized by staff from the Department of Geological Sciences, Stockholm University and The Natural History Museum. The conference was co-sponsored by the Bolin Centre Research Theme 3 “Past Climates” as well as Arctic Avenue, a spearhead Arctic research collaboration between the University of Helsinki and Stockholm University.

Wild birds possess genetic predispositions to learn population-specific songs

Genetic predispositions guide population-specific song learning in wild birds, shows new research from Stockholm University. By studying adult pied flycatchers that had been translocated as eggs from the Netherlands to Sweden, the researchers found that the songs of translocated birds resembled both their social environment in Sweden as well as their ancestral Dutch population. These results show how genetic differences can impact cultural change in birdsong and how they can together, contribute to mating barriers between bird populations.

Aerosol-cloud project will increase reliability of climate models

There are large gaps in the knowledge of the relationship between aerosols and clouds, which makes it the largest uncertainty factor in climate models. Annica Ekman, Department of Meteorology, and Paul Zieger, Department of Environmental Science, have received funding for the project ”Clouds and climate transitioning to post-fossil aerosol regime: CleanCloud” from Horizon Europe. The project aims at substantially increasing the knowledge about the interplay between aerosols and clouds and improving the representation of related processes in climate models.

Can COP28 be considered a success?

The UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties 2023, commonly referred to as COP28, just wrapped up in Dubai, UAE. New State of the Cryosphere 2023 report from ICCI

The report underlines the urgency and importance of recognizing the fact that we cannot negotiate with the melting point of ice. It stresses that 1.5°C is the only option, and that the 2 °C target put forward by the Paris agreement is way too high.

New study: Methane emissions offset carbon uptake in Baltic macroalgae habitats

Bladderwrack in the Baltic Sea emits significant amounts of methane, which, to some extent, can offset the uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide by these algae. This is shown by a new study from Askö Laboratory, where the fluxes of greenhouse gases between surface waters and the atmosphere were measured continuously over several seasons.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities has awarded Associate Professor Fredrik Charpentier Ljungqvist the Rettig Prize 2022 for his “interdisciplinary works concerning climate and diseases in a long-term perspective that demonstrate the importance of humanistic and historical perspectives on crucial contemporary issues”. The prize sum is 250.000 SEK.

Earth orbit variations effect on climates and biomes during one major climate transition

By comparing the results of simulations of the climate of the Eocene and Oligocene epochs, describing different configurations of the Earth's orbit, a study published in the journal Science Advances, shows the role of these orbital variations in the ancient climate variability and their influence on the vegetation cover. Scientists from IPGP, CEREGE, CNRS, University of Paris and their colleagues identify major environmental changes in tropical areas and along certain dispersal corridors, which may have had an implication in the migration of fauna at the time. Urban butterflies and moths have evolved adaptations that extend their flight season

A new study shows that butterflies and moths tend to be active later in the fall in urban than in rural environments. Experiments demonstrate that their response to seasonal variation in day length has evolved, resulting in a later start of the overwintering state, called diapause, in urban populations.

European forest microclimates mapped at high resolution

A new paper, published in Global Change Biology and co-authored by researchers from the Dept. of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences at Stockholm University, provides novel high-resolution Europe-wide maps for monthly sub-canopy temperatures. These maps are very valuable for ecological modelling and research on climate change impacts on biodiversity. The study utilized a newly established global microclimate database (SoilTemp), for which new contributions are always welcome.

Climate modelling at the Bolin Centre

Numerical models of the global climate system are essential tools in research carried out at the Bolin Centre. Earth system models are used across the research areas to study topics covering deep ocean circulation, land surface processes, atmospheric composition and dynamics and upper atmospheric physics. Bolin Centre researchers also participate in the development of the next generation of Earth System Models. The modelling coordination team at the centre ascertains that the necessary computational resources are available for the Bolin Centre researchers to be able to carry out this work.

In May this year, Sara Blichner started as a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Environmental Science. Earlier, when working on her PhD in meteorology at the University of Oslo, she had been in contact with Ilona Riipinen, and Stockholm University became an attractive next step. She has contributed to the latest IPCC report and is now involved in EU’s FORCeS project, which tries to understand and reduce the long-standing uncertainty in anthropogenic aerosol radiative forcing.

Kebnekaise’s south peak continues to melt – two metres lower than last year

On August 14, 2021, the southern peak of Sweden´s highest mountain Kebnekaise was measured at 2 094,6 meters above sea level by researchers at Tarfala Research Station. This is the lowest height that has been measured since the measurements started in the 1940s, and almost two meters lower than the corresponding time last year.

New study maps out how fast the ice retreated in the region Skåne-Småland-Öland during 725 years

By using newly collected cores of sediments from the sea-bottom in the region between Öland and the Swedish mainland, new onshore samples in Blekinge and Skåne, and digitizing unpublished varve data from 1900-1985, researchers have mapped out how fast the ice retreated during the last ice age. The results suggest rapid ice retreat around 15000 years ago. The retreat was 3-5 times faster offshore compared to onshore.

New study: Thick sea-ice warms Greenland fjords

A new study shows that thick sea-ice can increase the sensitivity of Greenlandic fjords to climate warming. Understanding the factors that control how fast glaciers move, break up and deposit chunks of ice (icebergs) into the fjords—and eventually the sea—is vital for predicting how the Greenland ice sheet will change under a warming climate and for predicting global rates of sea-level rise.

Scientists from Research Area 6 launched the Miocene Temperature Portal

On the 26the April 2021, scientists from Bolin Centre Research Area 6 (Deep Time Climates) and international collaborators launched the Miocene Temperature Portal (https://bolin.su.se/data/miocene-temperature-portal), which allows investigators interested in the Miocene to access and share published proxy temperature records from the marine realm. The Rossby Centre has a large CMIP model-data library, which is continuously expanded with more datasets. Bolin Centre members outside the Rossby Centre are welcome to access and use this data. Calving processes at marine terminating glaciers are poorly understood, hindering efforts to reduce the uncertainty of future sea level rise estimates. Observational data is often low resolution and satellite-based, meaning individual calving events cannot be identified. During the Ryder 2019 expedition, a time lapse camera was set up overlooking the calving front of Ryder glacier in order to create a high resolution data set of calving events during a 12-day period.

A new warming phase in the Subpolar North Atlantic

The waters in the Subpolar North Atlantic – the area between Greenland, Iceland and Scotland – are an important part of the Atlantic overturning circulation (popularly known as the Gulf stream) that keeps it running. The area is known for its temperature variations, and data available from the 1950s show that some decades are warmer, other cooler. 2005–2015 has been a cool period, but since 2016 and onwards, scientists now can see the first signs of a new warming period. The results are presented in a new article published in Communications Earth & Environment.

A better understanding of how soil carbon is distributed in the Arctic

Two scientific articles bring a better understanding of the spatial variability of soil organic carbon in the Arctic permafrost region. One article published in Global Biogeochemical Cycles led by Umeå researcher Matthias Siewert, and with Gustaf Hugelius as co-author, is describing how permafrost and periglacial landforms cause a unique variability in Arctic soils. A second article in Science Advances provides a new map for the soil organic carbon stored in the circumpolar permafrost region.
