Research School on the Arctic Ocean Climate System
The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat (SPRS) just finished Research School onboard the Swedish research icebreaker //Oden//, from 10 August to 18 September.
Another name for the school could have been the “80-to-80 Research School” as Oden traversed from the Fram Strait, across the North Pole and then approximately followed the E/W 180° meridian south to almost 80°N on the “other” side before returning to Svalbard.
Twenty-one graduate and doctoral students participated, several who are members of the Bolin Centre. The Research School was coordinated by another Bolin Centre member, professor emeritus Michael Tjernström.
During six weeks the students manned 8 work packages working mapping the sea floor, taking sediment samples, analyzing the physics and biogeochemistry of the ocean, assessing the sea ice and the snow and taking atmospheric observations.
Meanwhile they worked with the data collected, analyzing and discussing and also took part workshops and a lecture series across all the primary parts of the central Arctic climate system. They experienced snow storms in the middle of summer, walked on the North Pole and participated in life onboard, with sauna, cinema, salsa classes, weekend dress-up dinner and of course the ever-important ping-pong tournament. All the students survived and did an excellent job!
