RT2 workshop: A success in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across career stages
RT2 “Water, biogeochemistry and climate” organized the workshop “Current Challenges in Surface and Groundwater Research in the Context of Climate Change and Sustainability” from December 10–12, 2024 at Lejondals Slott near Stockholm.

The event gathered 27 scientists from diverse disciplines including hydrology, biogeochemistry, and economics representing the Departments of Physical Geography, Geological Sciences, Ecology Environment and Plant Sciences, and the Stockholm Resilience Centre from Stockholm University.
In addition SMHI, the Swedish Agricultural University, Umeå University, and Department of Earth Sciences, Gothenburg University, Chalmers University, as well as international researchers from the University of Eastern Finland, the Potsdam Institute of Climate Impact Research in Germany, the University of Sevilla, Spain, and the Digital University of Antioquia in Colombia participated in the workshop.
The program combined collaborative group work with solicited talks by invited speakers Lina Polvi Sjöberg (Umeå University) and Marcus Klaus (SLU). During group sessions, participants identified the following critical topics central to the workshop theme:
- Hydrological connectivity across scales and disciplines
- Reconnecting water in the framework of restoration in Sweden
- Rethinking water metrics in business management: From reporting to taking action
- Transcending scales and their implications for water cycle assessments
Efforts to advance these topics are already underway, with plans to produce a policy brief and at least one scientific article.
Feedback from attendees emphasized the workshop’s success in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across career stages and inspiring new research directions. By bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise, the workshop demonstrated the power of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing complex water-related challenges.
